The Style Archive

Exactly one year ago, Elise, Jesse and I embarked on an ambitious project. Bored of the default styles, we decided that a style contest would be the best way to generate some beautiful styles for the community. It began quite small, simply a Movable Type Style Contest. However, with Six Apart's blessings and a team of their employees, we were able to expand our horizons and cater for the entire Typepad and LiveJournal communities too (and in the end I'm extremely glad we did, the participation from these two communities was fantastic!). With over 140 gorgeous styles, I certainly didn't envy the decisions the judges had to make.

The Style Archive

Our vision of the site, however, didn't just end with a style contest. We wanted to create The Style Archive, a permanent repository of styles that would remain open to submissions. Over the summer, Jesse and I have been toiling away and along with the entire team are extremely proud to launch it today.

The Style Archive features a completely new design, launched earlier in the summer, which makes it incredibly easy to browse through the designs available and choose the perfect one for your blog. We've also gone Web 2.0 and introduced "style tagging" - designers can now tag their styles and you can easily view styles with similar tags. In the next few weeks, we're hoping to expand this such that the entire community can participate and tag styles.

Designers, there are a whole lot of new features for you. The Designer's Area is now much snappier. Uploading new styles should now take a few seconds and you will now get instant feedback if your submission fails some of the criteria. This means that you'll be able to get your styles approved much faster (and of course, it takes some of the burden off us!).

The Style Archive, like the contest before it, can only truly be a success with your participation so I encourage you to browse through the styles, comment and rate them and design your own!

This is really great! Do you have instructions on installing these new templates?

Or are these not available for use on personal blogs yet?

Hi Ashley. We're still working on better documentation but for now you can use the StyleCatcher plugin. Just feed it the URL of a design you like and it will download and apply the style for you. These tutorials will help to guide you through moving sidebars around and creating a three column layout.

The URL feeding didn't work but that is probably an issue with my set up.

Will you have documentation soon?

Thanks!!

Nice designs. How do I use them? I have the stylecatcher plug-in but can't figure out how it works.

Hi Giz, browse through the archive and when you find a style you'd like to use, copy it's URL (for example http://www.thestylearchive.com/designs/summer_love) and paste it into StyleCatcher. StyleCatcher will download the style and prompt you to apply it to a blog.

I'm currently considering moving from Wordpress to Movable Type but I'm having trouble finding three features in any of the styles in this gallery or anywhere else:

1) A top banner like the one here. I'd like to be able to add static pages to the banner in "tabs" the way you've done with Movalog. I'd also like to stick search up in there.

2) Nice comments. I really like the comment style here on Movalog -- I like the separation of comments and I like the fact that the blog author's comments are highlighted. I have not seen that in any of the styles out there.

3) I'd like to remove the navigation stuff at the top of the archived articles like so: « LivePreview 1.11 | Main | Simply Threaded 1.0 » « Support Forums Reopened | Announcements

Are these things not controled via styles? Is there anyway I could get a copy of the style used on this blog as a reference?

Thanks, Rourke

Hello Aravind,

Thank you for the idea of the Style Contest. Made it possible to have a choice besides the 'dreary' default templates.

I went with the Shlyapa and whilst setting up the design for my blog, I realised that the author details on the Style Archive are incorrect. I have blogged about it at: Not Just Cricket: Work In Progress: The Style Archive - An error!!

It probably was an inadvertent error and this is just to bring to your attention so that the rightful author gets the credit.
