MT 3.1 Screenshots

Movable Type 3.1 is the feature upgrade that everyone was looking for in 3.0D. There are three main new features, dynamic templating, post scheduling and subcategories. Lets take a tour around these new features. These are some screenshots from the first beta, so the final product may not be exactly the same.

Dynamic Templating

The first thing you notice is when you go to the manage templates page. A new build options section has been created and gives you the following three options:

  • Build All Templates Statically
  • Build Only Archive Templates Dynamically
  • Set Each Template's Build Options Separately

The options do what they say, if you chose the last option then a check box appears on the edit templates page that allows you set that template to publish dynamically.

To setup dynamic templating you will have to add certain parts to your .htaccess file in your weblog root directory, create a few folders, change a few things and voila, MT is now dynamic !

SubCategories

The second new feature is SubCategories. A spiffy new interface was promised and it has been delivered. You can easily see and create parent and subcategory relationships. I like the pretty colours and icons, superb work.

Post Scheduling

The third and final main new feature in MT 3.1. Basically you need to setup a cron to run a tool in MT that would enable future posting. 6A recommend you set it to run every 15 minutes.

I am sorry to say this Arvind... but whatever MT is doing now has already been done in WP ages ago, so I really don't understand where the MT development cart went all this time...

Inspite of these efforts, I would still say that WP is better and it's only version 1.2 now... :)

Lets not start this "MT Catching Up" debate again. Its been done already and I have expressed my views. Each to his own !

Besides which, beta testers are not supposed to publicly discuss any details of the software. :(

The only thing I want to know is why aren't they building in more "Quicktags" or a spell checker. By the way, great site. Found it via Elise.

Shelley, I specifically emailed Anil about this and he said Go Ahead ;)

Nice to see the screenshots... I assume these are the same ones that Six Apart said that they would be producing back in their initial announcement?

This is beta 1. I am not sure whether this is the version 6A were goign to post screenshots on or whether this was the one that was demo'd at BlogOn or at the Mixer.

Even still, 6A once again show us how poor their communication is. They say in their announcement that further details and screenshots will be posted soon... we're now 4 days from it's release and nothing.

And now its late on the release date and no word as to where MT3.1 is.

Hopefully they will announce either the new release OR the delay soon.

How it is late ? 6A didn't say the minute August 31st ticked over they'd released it. It may well be late but at least the update to the app is coming much faster. And its still August 31st give 'em some time !

Edit: At the time of writing this comment it is 1am where Six Apart are located.
