MT SCode 1.0

UPDATE: Fixed a bug where the image would only appear when you were logged into MT. Its a one line fix in SCode.pm

Although CAPTCHAs have several problems, there is no denying that catch most (if not all) of the spam. The most popular CAPTCHA generating plugin for Movable Type, SCode, had not been updated in a long time as the author had migrated to Drupal. It still involved hacking and did not integrate with 3.2's new junk/feedback framework. As a result, I took the plugin and did some major re-writing to make it work with 3.2. A run down of the new features:

  • No Hacking Required - Simply drop the plugin in and enable it to use
  • More Friendly UI - Previously, you would have to set various options within the file, this has been scrapped for the new plugins listing interface.
  • Selectively Enable - SCode can now be selectively enabled on blogs, hence some blogs can be checked by SCode will others needn't be.
  • Junk/Feedback Integration - You can now chose whether to have SCode reject the comment (with an error) or junk it when the code is incorrectly entered.
  • Dynamic Templating Support - You can now use SCode on those dynamic templates too.

Dude, you've been busy! I love the scode plugin, it's absolutely bullet proof. I get nearly no spam comments.

Now that you've updated it, I'm about over the edge on upgrading to MT 3.2.

You have no idea! I still have around 7 plugins I need to release/write. There's never been a better time to be an MT user :)

The only problem is that (because of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, which came into force this year) its illegal to use in the UK (because it isn't accessible to disabled users and there's no reasonable alternative)

Sorry.. that was me above. Was just trying to see if I didn't write the word 'allow' in the box below, will my comments be posted or not? It did. I thought it was a form of CAPTCHA - but I was wrong.

How do you protect yourself from SPAM? I've MT 3.2 installed and still get huge SPAM's. Can you kindly let me know your views on how to combat this?

Thanks Raj

I'm having a real hard time getting this to work with the new templates in MT 3.2, as I can't get it to integrate with the tag. I even tried changing 'function.MTCommentFields.php' but my changes aren't being picked up from here either. I appreciate that this is unsupported, so is there anywhere out there on the web where I can look for assistance on this?

Thanks!

Pete

That last post stripped out my tag. It was supposed to say 'MTCommentFields'. Thx!

Arvind!

Plugin MT SCode made by James (original author) is vulnerable for Insufficient Anti-automation (and possibly your version 1.0 too). I wrote about it in my Month of Bugs in Captchas.

MoBiC-07: mt-scode CAPTCHA bypass http://websecurity.com.ua/1516/

It's better for you to make your version of MT SCode not vulnerable for this hole.

P.S.

Captcha which you're using at your site is vulnerable for сonstant value bypass method. Attend to security of your site.

Will this work on a retail website that has a product comment box? I get hundreds of spam in the comments emailed to me every day trying to link my site with all kinds of stuff. I am looking for a way to stop this problem.

Thanks, CRS
