Updated Template Tag Reference

mttabs.png Some of you may remember the MT Tabs bookmarklet I had created oh so long ago that was quite simply a page that listed all the template tags available for easy reference. The best part of it was that it loaded in your browser's sidebar so it wouldn't interfere with and be separate from your Movable Type installation.

Well that bookmarklet (I'm trying to phase out the name "MT Tabs", it was badly chosen and didn't really reflect what the bookmarklet did) has been updated in a major way. What's new:

  •  Major overhaul of interface so that the tags are now more appropriately grouped and all the tags are now present (including ones I didn't know existed!)
  • All tags have been updated to point to the new Movable Type docs.
  • Ajax and Javascript is used in a huge way to make the bookmarklet more fun and easier to use. The AJAX has completely changed the way the bookmarklet works. When you now click a tag, a window fades in and gets the tag's description straight from the docs. This means that your workflow will never be interupted browsing other pages. The boxes can also be repositioned by simply dragging the titlebar.

I've got a few more updates planned for this bookmarklet. The highest on my priority list is to change this into an Ajaxify widget that will integrate directly within MT (but in a way that doesn't clutter up the UI - at the moment, I'm thinking of a button which will slide down the reference, a bit like OSX's dashboard feature).

So go grab the new template tag reference bookmarklet.

FYI, none of these links work in Safari. Yeah, saw the disclaimer. I'll be glad to betatest whatever you come up with for Safari.

Yeah, I meant the install button. Safari does have a sidebar, but I think you have to install a plugin. I clicked on the "Show Sideba" link which brings up a page-long box on the left, with a "+" icon at the bottom. There's nothing in the box; when I click on the "+" icon, it brings up a directory named "Sidebars" where there's nothing in it. So the key to providing access for Safari users may lie there. Try "Pimp my Safari" at http://pimpmysafari.com/ for more insights.

When I go to http://tabs.movalog.com/mt/mttabs.php in Safari, I see all the headers, and I click on one of the headers to bring down a list of subheaders, but when I click on one of these, nothing happens.

Hi Lola, thanks for the links. The mttabs.php file has been fixed for Safari, you may need to refresh the page a few times - I've found Safari's cache is quite persistent. I shall check out the links for more information.

Here's something to play around with . . . this should give you that sidebar experience on Safari.

No, that isn't it - it's actually for O'Reilly Safari books. Sorry for the wild goose chase.
